Public lecture on cryptography delivered by Tiit Hallas, Head of Information Security at SMIT

Tiit HallasPublic lecture on cryptography delivered by Tiit Hallas, Head of Information Security at SMIT. The event is part of the European Cyber Security Month.

Tiit Hallas, Head of Information Security at SMIT (the IT and Development Centre of the Ministry of the Interior) and a former student of IT College, holds a public lecture on cryptography at IT College on 18 October 2016 at 1:00 p.m.

The term cryptography opens up a mysterious and complex world, which few understand but which many of us face on a daily basis. Public key, certificate, encryption and digital signatures are but a few keywords. Why does a website need a security certificate? Why cannot we use Mobile-ID for decrypting CDOC formatted files? How does ID Card encryption work? What is a PKI and how does it function?

The lecture focuses on unravelling some of the complexities of this world in simple language and on answering the questions the audience may have. Tiit will introduce cryptography terminology, describe the basic principles of cryptography and explain its role in information security. He has promised to explain these complex issues in simple and understandable terms.

Tiit Hallas has worked in information security for over eight years in both public and private sector and has gained plenty of practical as well as theoretical experience in the field. He has a BA in Information System Development from IT College and an MSc in Cyber Security from Tallinn University of Technology. As well as delivering lectures and talks on the subject, Tiit is involved with Information Security in his daily work as the Head of Information Security at the IT and Development Centre of the Ministry of the Interior, where he not only manages staff but is also engaged with finding solutions to practical information security issues.

The public lecture will be held in Estonian IT College in Mustamäe at Raja 4C in Lecture Hall 314.

A live broadcast of the public lecture will also be available on IT College website at www.itcollege.ee.

Join the public lecture in Facebook (www.facebook.com/events/1241382599265396/). Please feel free to post any questions about the subject in the Facebook event page already before the lecture. Of course you are welcome to ask questions during the lecture as well.

IT College public lectures are delivered by distinguished IT experts and theoreticians with the aim of introducing the essential concepts, developments and theories of information and communication technology. The events are free and open to the public (www.itcollege.ee/avalikud-loengud/).
