An international Erasmus intensive course „Deploying IT Infrastructure Solutions“ took place in IT College from 24 March to 6 April. Its main aim was to provide IT students opportunities to test their knowledge and skills in solving the real assignments in international teams.

During almost two weeks 18 foreign students from Greece, Finland and Lithuania and 10 students from Estonia solved five actual tasks provided by IT company Helmes AS, Tallinn University of Technology and Estonian Information Technology College.

Helmes AS – Information system for registration of driving lessons
Estonian Information Technology College – Security testing of SIS
Estonian Information Technology College – System for giving feedback to students
Estonian Information Technology College – Sailing performance analysis
Tallinn University of Technology – Online program for reflecting Robotex contest results

Lecturers from international higher educational partner institutions, IT College lecturers and involved experts helped to reach the solutions.

IT College international studies specialist Martina Tsänkmann said that during the two week intensive course the participants got great international teamwork experience as well as they got to know closer the cultures of the participating partners. “Profession-specific lectures and practical works of lecturers of international higher educational partner institutions supporting the intensive course gave a significant added value.”

The developed IT solutions were very practical. Prototype solutions or solution proposals were provided. Reaching the functioning solutions presumed from students application of knowledge and skills obtained during different subjects, and teamwork.

IT company Helmes AS was very satisfied with the cooperation and was of the opinion that the developed registration information system for driving lessons could theoretically be the first prototype of bigger solution. “We liked the enthusiasm and capability of the students and we certainly wish to participate also next year,” said the recruitment specialist of Helmes, Kristina Friedberg.

The solution for the task of security testing of Estonian Information Technology College study information system (SIS) is already implemented. “The weaknesses of the study information system detected during the testing are communicated to the developers who immediately eliminated the weaknesses,” noted the IT College lecturer Margus Ernits.

According to IT College lecturer Priit Raspel, the solution for giving feedback to the students is fully implementable. “I intend to test the solution from the next term.”

Development of online reflection of Robotex competition results appeared to be too intensive task to be solved within the framework of the intensive course. At the same time the team considered the analysis of the task’s core as a valuable result.

Presentation of intensive course outcomes was a public event and the recording can be seen from IT College YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/estonianitcollege

An international Erasmus intensive course „Deploying IT Infrastructure Solutions“ started in IT College. Its main aim is to provide IT students opportunities to test their knowledge and skills in solving the real assignments in international teams. Within the two weeks the students solve five real IT assignments provided by IT company Helmes AS, Tallinn University of Technology and Estonian Information Technology College.

Students who have successfully passed their first academic year, can test their skills during the intensive week. During two weeks, the international teams with 4-6 members solve IT area tasks resulting in either a prototype solution or solution proposal. Reaching the functioning solutions presumes application of knowledge and skills obtained during different subjects, and teamwork.

18 foreign students from Greece, Finland and Lithuania and 10 students from Estonia will solve the tasks. Lecturers from international partner higher educational institutions, IT College lecturers Indrek Rokk, Margus Ernits, Linnar Viik, Kärt Rummel, Kaido Kikkas as well as involved experts help to reach the solutions. The working language of the intensive course is English.

”Finding solutions for specific, professional tasks in international groups is an ordinary everyday working procedure for people working in ICT field but it is not yet integrated into the learning activities of higher educational institutions,” said IT College lecturer Linnar Viik and he added that, ”this international intensive course in IT College gives our as well as students from other countries an essential experience for further work.”

The subjects of assignments to be solved during the intensive course:
Helmes AS – Information system for registration of driving lessons
Estonian Information Technology College – Security testing of SIS
Estonian Information Technology College – System for giving feedback to students
Estonian Information Technology College – Sailing performance analysis
Tallinn University of Technology – Online program for reflecting Robotex contest results

Presentation of intensive course results is a public event taking place on Thursday, 4 April 2013 at 14:00 in IT College. All interested people, IT students and representatives of the companies are welcome to listen to the presentations. Please register to the event latest by 1 April 2013 at 12:00 HERE.

One of the tasks in year 2012 contest to be solved was, ”Automated configuration of network connections with different networks.” The customer, Ericsson, was satisfied with the result.

For more information about intensive learning weeks and tasks in 2012 and 2011 see IT College wiki page.

Four teams participated in the work of intensive learning week in the spring of 2011. During that time the students updated the operating system Linux used in computer classes, analyzed the possibilities for increasing the speed of network file system in case of bigger number of users, created prototypes for the web applications of small companies with which the companies could manage the customer requests, respond to them and prepare the reports and created the mobile application for viewing the personal timetable.

InfoBuild Estonia OÜ and IT College signed a donation agreement. InfoBuild Estonia OÜ presented IT College an iWay Datamigrator software with data source interfacing tools for academic use. The value of the donation is significantly bigger than the donation of golden grantor to IT College.

”The X-mas present of InfoBuild Estonia OÜ to Estonian Information Technology College gives us a very good opportunity to increase the professional skills and knowledge of our graduates based on the most updated software and hence give the labor market even better prepared specialists,” said the Rector of IT College, Tiit Roosmaa.

The idea to present IT College the iWay Datamigrator software came from the alumna of IT College with the wish to make the data warehousing subject more interactive and interesting by providing different approaches to the data transfer solutions in the practical training of the subject.

The representative of InfoBuild Eesti, Rivo Uibo who graduated from the IT College in 2009 recognised that ”Up to now much emphasis is put specially on teaching the systems dealing with data collection but the value chain should not end there. Specially these data hide all kind of valuable information about different connections which help us to understand the causes of occurred events and enable better planning of activities and optimization of resources. I believe that the signed contract helps to make the data warehousing syllabus in IT College even more practical by providing the students additional knowledge to their expertise.”

IT College is grateful for the software for academic use.

”We really appreciate it when the IT sector companies can and consider it necessary to contribute to the improvement of study process and it is very pleasant to recognize that such proposals are made by our alumna,” noted the Quality Manager of IT College, Merle Varendi.

iWay DataMigrator is an extensive and fully automated tool set with the aim to facilitate the data integration including creation, management and expansion of data warehouses, data marts and operational data stores. With its simple and user friendly user interface, DataMigrator enables fast and flexible creation and management of data transfer processes. The distinctive feature of iWay DataMigrator is the fact that the software can be applied on platform of any operation system and it is capable to connect to all kinds of data structures used inside the organizations.

InfoBuild Estonia OÜ is a leading company specialising on business analytics, data warehousing and information system integration solutions. InfoBuild represents globally recognized IT Group Information Builders Inc in Estonian market. The solutions of the company are used in such companies like Police and Border Guard Board, Estonian Post, Tallink Ggroup, Estonian Environmental Services, etc InfoBuild Estonia belongs to United Software Distributors group (USD).

Short Summary

Diane Bisgeier, Program Manager of Mozilla’s WebFWD Open Innovation program: “Nearly a decade ago, the Internet was a scary place. The primary way that people could access the web was through Internet Explorer, which had gained over 95% market share after edging out the industry’s incumbent, Netscape Navigator, by bundling its browser with its operating system. Innovation was stifled and users not only experienced a poor product – pop-up windows, phishing and poor user interface – but also little choice in how they could connect and communicate with others. Determined that the Internet was too important to let languish or stay in the hands of one corporate entity, Mozilla was born to change this. In 2004, Firefox was born out of this vision to give users control over their web experience. Since then, the Mozilla community has been comprised paid staff and volunteers and contributors around the world developing new ways for people to not only consume but create the Internet that serves users above corporate interest. I will share more about this community, and how you can be involved in the next important phase of the Internet.”

Short Summary:
IT is not just about engineering but offers job opportunities in versatile business functions. These are special features of the industry that the IT branch rarely talks about. We’ll first look at some tough characteristics and fundamental conditions that make a company survival hard. Then we focus on a number of profound, disruptive, rule-breaking changes, and transformative and irresistible forces taking place today, like mobile, cloud, social and big data. These will alter the way that businesses – and even cities and whole societies – operate. We examine select key developments and explain why they are so important – and provide view on the innovations shaping the future.

If you are seeking for a possibility to resolve the IT area issues in your company but have not reached the solution yet, the students of Estonian Information College are eager to help you.

The third intensive study week will be held in March 2013 (from 24 March to 4 April 2013) with the primary aim to create possibilities for the students to test their knowledge and skills in solving the actual tasks. The prerequisite for the solutions is application of knowledge and skills obtained from different subjects. During two weeks the international teams with 5-6 members solve IT area tasks resulting in either a prototype solution or solution proposal. The students solving the tasks come from Estonia, Finland, Lithuania, Greece and Sweden. The lecturers of IT College and the involved experts assist students in reaching the solution.

We welcome all companies who wish to

• gain solutions for their tasks and problems;
• get to know better the IT College students as their future colleagues;
• contribute to the development of IT education;
• consolidate the cooperation between the company and IT College.

This year one of the tasks to be solved was ”Automated configuration of network connections with different networks.” The customer, Ericsson, was satisfied with the result.
